8 Tips to Keep your Jewellery Tip-top in Humid Weather

Jewellery Cleaning Tips

I’m from Singapore, and our 34 degrees celsius weather here is notorious for being super humid.

As a result, silver jewellery, especially, tarnishes in Singapore much faster than in places with low humidity. I know, not fair. Makeup also melts faster in Singapore, but then, that’s another story altogether.

Even gold and gold-filled jewellery that don’t tarnish can get a bit dull in our weather.

In short, humid weather makes bad things happen to good jewellery.

So being positive, forward-looking, non-complaining sorta girls, what should we do to keep our jewellery in tip-top condition?

Here are 4 DON’Ts and 4 DOs to Keep your Jewellery in Tip-top Condition.

  1. DON’T get harsh chemicals such as chlorine, hair spray, cosmetics and perfume on your jewellery. But if you do, it’s totally understandable. I usually can’t decide what perfume to wear until I’ve seen my entire outfit, so I end up getting tiny bits of perfume on my necklace and earrings.
  2. DON’T allow your gems and pearls to come into contact with the soapy water if possible.
  3. DON’T use toothpaste to clean your silver jewellery. Some website recommend that, but the abrasives agents inside can actually scratch the jewellery. So unless you are thinking of adding some fines lines to your jewellery, don’t use toothpaste to clean them.
  4. DON’T store your jewellery in the bathroom. The high humidity there will cause the jewellery to oxidize faster and tarnish sooner.

Then, make sure to rinse thoroughly and then dry with a soft cloth. Please avoid using tissues or paper towels on your jewellery. They deserve much better than that. Tissues and paper towels can sometimes cause scratches on jewellery, especially sterling silver ones.
  6. DO use a professional cleaning agent to Otherwise, I’d recommend using a jewellery cleaner to clean the metal and gems or pearls. You can try the Bling Brush from Baublerella.
